Fighting for rights
Citizens of Opium! We demand rights for clones! Our government has been segregating clones and humans for too long! Think, if you befriended a person, would you treat him like one? If you didn't know that he was a clone, you most likely would treat him like a human being. For example, El Patron's clone, Matt was carried to the hospital by some children after an accident, and when they got there, there "came a flurry of women's voices as they swept down the stairs to lift Matt from Steven's and Emilia's arms" (Farmer 23). When they found out Matt was a clone, they threw him outside. This is a perfect example of how clones should be treated like humans! Clones are not just beasts!
An example of how fighting for clones' rights is when Australian Aboriginals fought for the right to vote during the 1967 Australian Referendum (1967 Ref.). There was a law set in place that restricted them from voting, and they were discriminated by the government. Eventually, Aboriginals won their right to vote, just like we believe that clones will one day will be freed from the chains of racial injustice. Mission Statement: To free all clones from abuse and "racism" Mission Chant: Clones are not beasts! |
Corruption
As one would be able to notice while reading The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, the government in Opium is incredibly corrupt. The dictator of Opium, El Patron (Matteo Alacran,) was a very selfish man who lived for over 140 years. He had several clones made of himself so he could use them for organ transplants when his own organs failed him (Farmer 238). The people in Opium treat eejits (see "Eejits and Second Class Citizens" page) like property. Maria, Matt's first friend, once said, "Nobody ever asks questions about eejits. They're just part of the furniture" (218).
